DIESEL FUEL SAMPLE ANALYSIS BASICS

Diesel fuel sample analysis is a critical component of any fuel management program.  Diesel fuel is inherently unstable and susceptible to contamination. It breaks down over time and forms gums, varnishes, and sludge. It is contaminated by water that is introduced into the fuel system by condensation. Poor handling and storage practices can also result in water contamination. These factors make regular fuel sample analysis absolutely necessary.

 DIESEL FUEL SAMPLE KITS

There are several diesel fuel sample kits on the market. They range in price from $25 for a vacuum pump to $175 for a Bacon Bomb Thief.

 E-ZOIL DIESEL FUEL SAMPLE KIT

The E-ZOIL Diesel Fuel Sample Kit includes a vacuum pump, tube, and jar. The pump is attached to the jar. The tube inserts into the pump and then into the dipstick or fuel tank. The vacuum pump handle is pumped back and forth and the jar is filled.

 DIESEL FUEL SAMPLE ANALYSIS

There are numerous analytical diesel fuel sample tests. The most common include tests for water contamination, ash content, cetane number, cloud point, cold filter plugging point, pour point, lubricity, and particulate contamination.  Many of these tests are expensive so it's important to know beforehand which diesel fuel property requires analysis.

E-ZOIL offers many of the above tests at no cost to current customers.

 DIESEL FUEL ADDITIVES

Diesel fuel additives can significantly improve the performance of diesel fuel. Water dispersants can prevent corrosion of metal-fuel system components. Biocides can prevent the formation of sludge. Antioxidants can prevent the formation of gums and varnishes. See our diesel fuel additives for more information.

 CONCLUSION

Individuals and companies that handle or store diesel fuel should maintain a fuel storage management program that includes regular diesel fuel testing. Regular testing is easily accomplished via a vacuum pump or other similar means. E-ZOIL has the capability to perform many of the most common diesel fuel tests.
